Free popcorn. Bring a slice from down the block if you want. Dogs wander in. Nobody’s mixing a lavender cocktail.
The joint
The Upper West Side keeps getting shinier. Tap a Keg did not get the memo. Dim room, worn-in stools, neon in the window, a table in the back that actually gets used. Bartenders pour without a speech. Happy hour runs from noon to 7. Columbia kids, pensioners, and the occasional hustler share the same popcorn bowl. New York Magazine called it a clubhouse. That’s the idea.
Phone: 212-749-1734. If you are coming for us, lag is 7. If you are coming for them, pull up a stool anyway.
What people write
Pulled from the maps listing and the writeups that keep pointing at the same room. We kept the ones that sound like the bar we play in.
“I visit from Tennessee every year. Always get into a great pool game. Very friendly fun crowd.”
“Always love coming here and the staff makes me feel like home.”
“Tap a Keg is undeniably a dive, but it’s got more character than the neon beer signs on display there.”
“One of the last true dives in the neighborhood. Dim lights, cheap drinks, no pretense.”
A bartender calls the regulars “the pensioners.” You might also get a pool hustler, a Columbia grad on free popcorn, or a slice from Mama’s Too.
“Tap A Keg! …still One Hell of a joint!”
